ROOTED IN CULTURE. POWERED BY EQUITY. BUILT FOR SELA.
Foundation Overview
Rooted in a region known for its resilience, diversity, and artistic expression, our mission is to uplift the people and places that make SELA thrive. The SELA Arts Foundation uplifts the region’s rich artistic traditions and invest in the people and places shaping its future. We work hand in hand with local artists, youth, and community partners to expand access to the arts and build lasting cultural infrastructure.
Our flagship initiative, the SELA Cultural Center, will be a world-class facility designed in collaboration with the community and led by local vision. When completed, the center will serve as a creative anchor for the region, providing arts education, performance venues, gallery space, and more. Through this vital work and physical improvements to our region, the Foundation works to close long-standing resource gaps, expanding access to arts education, and create spaces where local voices and talent can thrive.
The SELA Arts Foundation is fiscally sponsored by the California Community Foundation (CCF). The Foundation invests millions of dollars into transforming Los Angeles, fostering partnerships, like the SELA Arts Foundation. Through innovative approaches, CCF uses their investments to maximize impact, empowering communities and strengthening the nonprofit sector for generations to come.
At this critical stage, we are focused on building the foundation for sustainable growth, equitable access, and long-term impact. We believe that the artist’s voice is strongest when it is harmonized. By working together as a creative network, representing Southeast Los Angeles, we transformed from a scattered collection of individual artists into a formidable coalition. We are not just building a network; we are building a movement, and a Cultural Center.
Through strategic partnerships and bold investments, we are helping shape a future where SELA’s creativity is celebrated, resourced, and recognized for generations to come.
Why SELA Arts Matter
Despite being home to more than a million residents, Southeast Los Angeles remains an arts desert, with almost no visual, performing, or media arts institutions serving its communities.
Despite hundreds of arts organizations across Los Angeles County, arts education reaches only 32 of 300 ZIP codes — and most are outside Southeast LA — illustrating that SELA communities have far fewer arts and cultural assets than central and westside neighborhoods.
